Working together with homeowners to eliminate mosquitos

Mosquito Squad of Chester and Delaware Counties works with homeowners to eliminate mosquitoes, ticks and other biting bugs from their yards. In order to enhance the value and effectiveness of any of our treatments we recommend homeowners walk their yard weekly to check for and eliminate likely breeding sites.

  • Tip - Tip over items in your yard to reduce standing water. The elimination of standing water decreases a mosquito’s breeding ground. Check your property for the following:
    • Bird baths – Freshen the water in bird baths on a regular basis.
    • Drain pipes near gutters
    • Drainage catch basins
    • Hoses and sprinkling cans
    • Lawn care and gardening equipment
    • Play sets with tire swings
    • Portable fireplaces and pits
    • Tree houses and bird feeders
    • Water bottles, beverage cans
  • Turn - Turn over items in your yard that could hold water. Look for the following:
    • Containers
    • Dog water bowls
    • Empty pots
    • Plant saucers
    • Recycling and garbage bins
    • Sandboxes, slides or plastic toys
  • Toss - Toss grass clippings, leaves, firewood, and piles of mulch that are yard trash. By keeping your yard clean, you can remove a major breeding area for mosquitoes and ticks. Check your yard, underneath decks, in gutters and along rooflines for accumulation of the following items:
    • Dead leaves
    • Excess mulch
    • Fallen branches
    • Grass clippings
    • Small twigs and plants
  • Remove Tarps - If tarps stretched over firewood, boats or sports equipment are not taut, they will hold water and become a breeding area for mosquitoes. Our technicians cite the following areas with poorly adjusted tarps:
    • Boats
    • Firewood piles
    • Grills
    • Portable fireplaces
    • Recycling cans
    • Sports equipment
  • Treat - By combining these tips with our professional treatment plans you should be able to eliminate up to 90% of the mosquitoes and ticks on your property, reducing the need to apply DEET and other chemicals to your skin.

In addition to the 5 T’s here are a few bonus T’s for you!

  • Take Care - Take care of home maintenance needs that can contribute to standing water. Areas that we see include:
    • Assess areas where water pools, such as near faucets or water spouts and uneven sod.
    • Check irrigation systems to ensure they are not leaking and creating a breeding haven.
    • Clean out gutters and make sure the downspout is properly attached.
    • Keep your lawn height low and weed landscaped areas.
    • Make sure that all fallen branches and hollow trees or logs are removed from your property
    • Consider regrading areas where water pools for more than a few hours.
  • Team Up - Despite taking all the precautions in your own home, talking with your neighbors is a key component to mosquito, and tick, control. Townhomes and homes with little space between lots mean that mosquitoes can breed at a neighboring home and effect your property.
